Festive traditions to start with your cat this year

Read time: 5 min
The festive season has arrived, and with it a host of questionable traditions we all politely pretend to enjoy… terrible jumpers, work Secret Santa (shudder) and the annual panic about whether you bought enough mince pies (you didn’t).
But this year, we’re in favour of creating festive traditions we’ll actually love, with someone who actually deserves it: your cat. It’s the perfect time to start new rituals together, cosy little traditions that celebrate your favourite four-legged roommate: the one creature who never judges your wrapping skills or the fact you ate the entire advent calendar chocolate on December 1st.
With a sprinkle of KatKin, a handful of treats and a cat who definitely did not agree to any of this, here are the festive traditions you can start together to make the season extra special.
1. Host a yearly festive photoshoot
Who says holiday cards are just for humans? Set up a corner in your home with twinkly lights, a few safe props and snap your cat doing… well, whatever they want. Bonus points if they ignore everything and walk away — because nothing says ‘holiday spirit’ like a cat butt. We love these ideas:
2. Gift exchange, cat edition
Show your cat they’re loved with a little gift (or three) each year. Whether it’s a new toy, a cosy blanket or a tub of Nibbles, watching them unwrap it, or promptly sit on it, will warm your heart.
3. DIY or personalised cat stocking
Give your cat their very own stocking filled with treats and toys. Seeing them discover the goodies (or, more likely, getting in it) will be a moment of pure joy, and a new tradition you’ll both cherish.
4. Festive feast night
Pick a special night to go all out for your cat. Serve their favourite KatKin meal, add some Sprinkles, and watch them enjoy it with the enthusiasm only a cat can have. Bonus: it doubles as a legit excuse for you to crack open the festive snacks yourself. (P.S. Your December box of KatKin comes complete with a special Christmas recipe, so your cat can join in the fun on the big day, too).
5. Holiday movie marathon
Snuggle up, press play and let the cat judge your film choices in peace. They’ll probably sit on the remote, knock over the popcorn or demand lap real estate, but that’s the magic of a true co-cinema experience. See our full guide to a perfect cosy night in with your cat here.
6. Make a cat decoration
In honour of your furry best friend, make (or just buy) an ornament of your cat to hang on the tree, or around your home, every year — think felt, clay or even a tiny photo in a frame.
