An update on the pouch-style recipes

An update on the pouch-style recipes
by KatKin Team

Read time: 6 min

We recently announced that we’ll be making three of our recipes available in pouch-style packaging, alongside the new trays. Thank you to everyone who filled in the survey and voted for their favourite recipes.

We've been working really hard to get these recipes available in the shortest space of time, and are excited to announce that we are launching Cluck, Gobble and Mooo in May.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Cluck will be available first. You’ll see it in your account from 1 May, and you’ll be able to add it to boxes being delivered from 9 May onwards.

  • Gobble and Mooo will be made available before the end of May. We’ll be in touch to update you when we have an exact date.

  • As you can see, the pouches have a slightly different shape to our original pouches. But the cooking method is exactly the same as before. Scroll down to see more on this.

  • It'd be great to know if you'll switch to pouch-style recipes in your next box – or if you're planning to stick to trays. Tell us in this survey by 1 May. There are only three questions, so it won't take long. Plus: three respondents will be chosen at random to get their next box free. We'll contact the winners on 2 May.

As always, our aim is to help as many cat parents as possible feed fresh. And we hope that, by making pouch-style recipes available again, customers who are unhappy with the new trays will be able to continue to feed their cats fresh. This also gives us time to improve the new trays further.

We’d like to thank you for all the support, feedback and kind words we’ve received since we shared our last update.  KatKin would be nothing without our brilliant community, and we’re taking every single comment on board.

All the best,

Brett + Nikki

P.S. We know you’ll probably have more questions. So we’ve rounded up some FAQs on these pouch-style recipes below.

Which pouch-style recipes will be available?

You voted for Cluck, Gobble and Mooo. These recipes will be available from May for a minimum of six months, to help customers who are struggling to transition their cat.

Reminder: all our recipes are nutritionally complete and balanced. So, if you have an extra-fussy cat, it's absolutely fine to feed it only one recipe on a long-term basis.

Is the food the same as in the old KatKin pouches?

Yes. We use the same fresh, high-quality meat – in all types of packaging. The food in the pouch-style packaging will have the same chunkier texture as the original pouches, as the cooking method is the same, too.

How are the pouch-style recipes different from old KatKin pouches?

The soft plastic pouch will be a slightly different shape to what you might expect. However, the cooking method is exactly the same as our original pouches. The food is gently cooked in the plastic pouches, then frozen fresh to preserve essential nutrients.

How do I open and serve from the pouches?

You can use scissors to open the pouches. Simply cut off the top of the pouch and squeeze out half into  your cat’s bowl. Each pouch is 100% of your cat's daily calorie requirement, so we recommend you serve one half in the morning and the other in the evening.

Can I heat up the pouch-style recipes?

Yes. If your cat prefers a warm meal, you can heat the pouch-style recipes for 10-15 seconds in the microwave, or add 2-3 teaspoons of boiling water. If you’re tight on time, you can also defrost a pouch of food quickly by placing it in a bowl of hot water for 15 minutes.

We are currently making improvements to the trays that will improve the experience of heating up the food in our new packaging.

How do I store the pouch-style recipes?

Store the pouch-style recipes in your freezer, but keep five in the fridge ready to serve. Unopened, they’ll stay fresh for five days.  Serve within two days once open.

How do I add the pouch-style recipes to my next box?

From 1 May, you will be able to see the pouch-style recipes in your account portal. You can add them to any orders going out from 9 May onwards. By default, any upcoming order will only include recipes in the new trays, unless you manually update this in your account portal.

If you have a box due before 9th May, and would like to receive the pouch-style recipes, first delay your box and then select the recipes you’d like.

How long are they available for?

We will continue with both styles of recipes for a minimum of 6 months, before we determine if we should continue with the new trays or go back to the pouch-style recipes. We will be gathering feedback from you throughout this time to ensure we make the right decision for our cat parents.

Why are you bringing back pouch-style recipes?

Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the new packaging and cooking process we switched to in March. While 79% of your cats have been eating the food, and 64% of you prefer the new trays to the old packaging, some of you have been disappointed with these changes.

Currently, 28% are struggling to transition their cats to the new tray recipes. Our mission is to give every cat access to fresh, high-quality food they'll love. So we know we have to do better.

We hope that, by making pouch-style recipes available again, we will help customers who are unhappy with the new trays continue to feed fresh.

This also gives us time to further improve the recipes in the new trays further. We want these to meet everyone's expectations.

You can read more about our decision in this update.

What if my cat is happily eating the food from the new trays?

That's great! Many cats are enjoying eating from the trays – this is because the high-quality ingredients and nutritional composition haven't changed.

Can I feed my cat from both pouches and trays?

If you choose to order the pouch-style recipes, we hope you continue to try the new trays, too. You'll be able to see the improvements we're making every week.

Haven’t introduced your cat to food from the trays yet? Try mixing it with food from the pouch-style packaging for 3-7 days. This will help your cat get used to the new, finer texture.
